I’ve come up with the perfect way to organize all the storage bins in my house using Notion and NFC tags, and I felt like someone else might find this handy.
Here’s what you need to create a setup like mine:
- Storage bins: I recommend clear plastic ones for visibility, and I used the 17 gal HDX Tough Tote from Home Depot, though any container will work fine. I also use wicker baskets for storage when it’s visible in my house.
- Printable labels: I use these white sticker labels with six to a sheet. The key is they’re also removable so you can easily change them when you want to update one.
- NFC Tags: You can order a roll of 50 1 inch NFC stickers for 15 dollars on Amazon and you can even get them in different colors. You’ll also need an app on your phone to program the tags. I used one called NFC Tools.
- Notion: And, of course, your Notion account — you can use my storage template or just create your own database.
The first thing you need to do is organizing your bins, which is the worst part. But as you put stuff into bins, all you need to do is take photos of every time you put in the bin. Then, once you have all your stuff organized, you can add all the bins to your Notion database. I’ve provided a template link in the description below which is already set up like this, but of course, you can just make one yourself if you want.
- Locations where containers are stored: And for these, I also select the kind of place it is: like room, shed, built-in shelves, etc. And I paste a photo of the location into the Notion page.
- Then, I start creating the storage bins: Name, location, description, the kind of stuff I put in there, and what kind of container it is.
- But for this to work, you create a Relation field that links back to the same database.
- I also assign numeric ID numbers to the bins to help return them to the exepected order once I’ve looked in one, and just make it easy to differentiate bins and connect a bin to its notion page.
- Then, I paste a picture of the bin on the notion page. I also paste a picture of every item in the bin here. This works fine if you want to stop here. But I take it one step further and add a page for each item in the bin, and this makes it easy to paste the images in to each item’s page.
