Craftsman homes are an American architectural tradition that emerged and spread primarily between 1900 and 1929 — a backlash against the mass-produced, Industrial Revolution-fueled Victorian architecture boom that prized ornament and decoration made more accessible by new technologies.

The Industrial Revolution celebrated the wonders of manmade materials and machine-created products, but Craftsman architecture was an aesthetic reaffirmation of the beauty of natural materials and forms, and the marvels of what humans can make with their own hands.

The American Craftsman style was inspired by the British Arts and Crafts movement, which itself resulted as a backlash to Europe’s Industrial Revolution. The California Bungalow style of Craftsman home was also popularized by Pasadena, CA-based brothers Henry and Charles Greene, who were heavily influenced by Japanese style. Another notable style that emerged from the American Craftsman movement was the much celebrated Prairie School of architecture founded by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who went on to design some of the world’s masterpieces of Mid-Century Modern architecture.

Finnish Hot-to-Cold Wellness Retreat

The backyard’s wellness retreat has a custom Japanese yellow cedar hot tub and cold plunge, wet sauna, and outdoor shower. Finland, a country with 5.3 million people and 2 million saunas (1 for every two Finns), often receives credit for originating hot-to-cold spa treatments.

Saunas originated as sterile ways to bathe before plumbing, and the word sauna is a Finnish word that means “bath.” The first Finnish saunas were dug into ridges in the ground, and later were built above ground, with wooden logs. Rocks were heated in a stone stove, using a wood fire. Winters in Finland can last up to seven months in the northernmost regions; hence their desire for extremely hot saunas. Finns insist that coming out of the sauna and jumping into a lake or rolling in snow naked results in a heightened sense of alertness, increased adrenaline, reduced pain perception, and an elevated mood. Doctors also say that the hot sauna, cold plunge practice can improve pain and inflammation from rheumatoid arthritis.

Hot Tub

  • Remove the hot tub cover.
  • The hot tub turns itself on and off automatically on a cycle, but you can also turn it on manually. If the hot tub jets are already running, you can see the hot tub’s current temperature on the control panel located on top of the pool heater near the apartment bathroom window. You can adjust the heat using the red and blue arrow buttons, and you can turn off the heat completely by pushing the “Heater Off” button. “Spa On” turns on the heater.
  • If the hot tub jets are not running, you must push the white button on the hot tub to turn them on, which also will enable heat control from the control panel.
  • You can also control the amount of bubbles in the tub by turning the round, gray dial control on top of the hot tub.
  • When you’re finished with the hot tub, push the white button to turn off the jets. If the hot tub doesn’t turn it off, it’s in an automatic cycle and you can simply leave it on. Then, re-cover the hot tub.

Cold Plunge

  • Open the pool cover.
  • The cold plunge pool turns itself on and sets itself to 44ºF automatically every day from 6am to 9am and 7pm to 11pm, but you can also turn it on manually.
  • You can see the pool’s current temperature by looking at the display in the waterproof box attached to the sauna above the cold plunge.
  • If you want to adjust the temperature of the cold plunge, open the waterproof box using the latches on the right side and hold down the power button until the controller unlocks.
  • Once the controller is unlocked, you can turn the pump on/off by holding down the power button until it toggles on/off. Once on, you can control the temperature of the cold plunge with the arrow buttons.
  • When you’re finished with the cold plunge, close the pool cover. You can wait for the pool to turn itself off automatically at 9am/11pm, or you can turn the pool off manually by holding the power button to unlock the controller and then hold it again to turn off.

Sauna

  • The sauna is electric and can be controlled using the panel on the bottom right of the heater inside the barrel.
  • Choose your desired temperature using the left-side dial.
  • The heater has a 60 minute timer — between the large 0 and 1 on the right-side dial. To use the sauna’s full 60 minute cycle, turn the timer knob past 1 (to 2) and and then back to 1 until you hear a click.
  • The sauna will take about 30 minutes of the cycle to heat up.
  • If you want to set the heater to automatically turn on later in the day, you can set the right-side dial to one of the small numbers: 1 to 8. For example, if you set the dial to 3, the sauna will turn on after 3 hours and be ready to use in 3.5 hours (after a half hour heat-up time). The heater will then turn off automatically after an additional half hour.

Pink Lemon Tree

The variegated pink lemon, also called the pink-fleshed Eureka lemon, is a cultivar of lemon (Citrus × limon) with unique pink flesh, a green-striped rind when ripening, and variegated foliage. It was discovered as a sport — a part of a plant that shows morphological differences from the rest of the plant — on an ordinary Eureka lemon tree in Burbank, California, in 1931.
